Morning: Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı)
10:00 AM: Start your day at the Basilica Cistern, one of Istanbul’s most famous and biggest underground structures. Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, this cistern is known for its impressive architecture, including 336 marble columns and the mysterious Medusa heads.
Don’t forget to highlight the unique atmosphere created by the dim lighting and the reflections on the water.
Theodosius Cistern (Şerefiye Sarnıcı)
Head to the Theodosius Cistern, another remarkable underground structure built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II. This cistern is less crowded but equally impressive with its intricate carvings and historical significance.
Spend some time exploring and taking photos. The cistern often hosts art exhibitions, which can add an extra layer of interest to your tour.
Lunch Break
Enjoy a lunch break at a nearby restaurant. There are plenty of options in the Sultanahmet area, offering both traditional Turkish cuisine and international dishes.
Afternoon: Binbirdirek Cistern (Cistern of Philoxenos)
Visit the Binbirdirek Cistern, also known as the Cistern of Philoxenos. This is the second-largest cistern in Istanbul and features 224 columns. It’s a bit off the beaten path, making it a quieter spot to explore.
Late Afternoon: Nakkaş Cistern
End your tour at the Nakkaş Cistern, located beneath the Nakkaş Oriental Rugs store. This cistern is smaller but offers a unique experience as it combines history with a modern commercial space.
Wrap up your tour with some shopping or a coffee at the store’s café.
